The ad in the paper had said “145 dollars paid cash. Need someone to watch concrete. 5 hour minimum.”

Charlie chuckled a sad laugh. The math didn’t look great, but he was barely scraping by from odd job to odd job as it was. Besides, watching concrete? This had to be a joke, and even if it wasn’t, he’d done worse for less.

Worst case scenario he would get paid to sit somewhere and watch concrete get poured. Maybe a construction company was trying to shortchange the red tape some suit had insisted upon- cut a corner and pay him instead of having an actual inspector or safety team. It didn’t matter to Charlie. He’d walk away with grocery money, and the concrete would be watched.
